There are just under 200,000 motorcycles registered in the State of Georgia. Because motorcycles do not offer the same protection as automobiles, the risk of injury or death in a motorcycle accident is higher than with other types of vehicles. By law, motorcycles have the same rights and responsibilities on the road as other vehicles do. Unfortunately, many motorcycle accidents occur when the driver of a car or truck does not see the motorcycle. Motorcycle drivers must make every effort to ensure other drivers know they are there.
Cochran & Edwards supports local, State, Federal and law enforcement efforts to make motorcycle riders safer and decrease motorcycle accidents. As the weather improves, more bikers will be on the roads. With increased ridership comes an increase in the chance of an accident.
Here are some motorcycle safety tips available through the government’s “Share the Road” program and other resources to help you prevent an accident:
- Follow the rules of the road
- Riders and passengers should both wear approved helmets (click here to watch a video on choosing a helmet)
- Do not take passengers with you until you have some solid experience on your bike
- Wear protective clothing and eye gear that is highly visible or reflective
- Take a motorcycle safe-driver class
- Drive defensively - assume that car and truck drivers do not see you
- Don’t be distracted by the cell phone, radio, etc.
- Watch the road for potholes or debris
- Never drive while drunk or otherwise impaired
